James Hardie produces the most popular fiber cement siding and related products on the market today. Homeowners are often more satisfied with James Hardie siding than not, but the ones who do run into issues is typically because of a poor installation job. When properly installed, James Hardie siding has a lifetime, non-prorated warranty of 30 years.
James Hardie is a premium fiber cement siding product and a good portion of the cost is associated with the labor when installing. For these reasons, a knowledgeable siding contractor is recommended, like EMA Construction, and preferably a member of the James Hardie Contractor Alliance Program. As a James Hardie Elite Preferred contractor, EMA Construction has proven compliance with installation best practices.
James Hardie Siding Installation Best Practices
Clearances
Specific clearances should be practiced with James Hardie siding to ensure the long-term durability of the product and the home. If proper clearances are not followed, it may affect the performance. Proper clearances include:
- Siding to Ground
Minimum of 6”above the exterior of the building
- Siding to Flashing
1/4” flashing clearance between siding and any horizontal flashing. Do not caulk in these areas.
- Siding to Solid Surfaces
1 to 2” away from roof surfaces, decks, driveways, steps and other hard surfaces

Flashing
Roof, window, or door flashing should be properly installed and lapped so moisture drains down and to the exterior when installing James Hardie siding.
Blind Nailed vs. Face Nailed
James Hardie recommends installing siding using the blind nailing technique. If nailed improperly there is risk of voiding the James Hardie warranty. Improper siding nailing is one of the most common install mistakes. Other blind nailing techniques to remember include:
- Proper size of the nails should be 6d or siding nails.
- Nails must be driven in straight (not over-driven or under-driven).
- Don’t drive the nails at an angle
- Each plank end should be fastened to a stud
- Add nail butt joints last
Details around Windows and Doors
One of the most crucial aspects of the installation process of any siding is around the home’s windows and doors. First, when installing James Hardie® siding, make sure a drip cap is installed over the window. A 1/4” gap should be left, without caulking, between the window and the plank or board directly on top of it so any water that may have seeped behind the siding can get out. This practice should be followed for the tops of doors as well.
